Ack Attack Post 15: Acura SLX

Made from 1996-1999, the Acura SLX was Acura's first SUV vehicle. This SUV was built in Japan by Isuzu, hence why it looks much like an Isuzu Trooper. They had a 3.2L V-6 engine with a super small 190hp. There were two versions, the base and the premium which included a few "extras". The SLX was produced to compete with the GMC Yukon, Lincoln Navigator, Chevy Tahoe, and the Ford Expedition.

Over the years, changes were made to the SLX's styling and power options. A power moonroof became standard in 1997, as did heated seats, a compass, outside-temp. gauge, leather seats, power mirrors, simulated woodgrain interior trim, and fog lights. In 1998, the SLX got a new engine which was a 3.5L, giving the car 215 hp.

Drama is not common in Acura/Honda vehicles, but it is the main cause of the short life-span of the SLX. From 1996-1997, the press released that the SLX had a rating of "Not Acceptable" by Consumer Reports beacuse it had a high tendency to roll over. Although after a court battle, it was decided that some of the statements made the magazine were ludicrous, but consumers still had this bogus knowledge with them. Sales decreased in 1999, so Acura took a break for 2000. In 2001, the SLX reappeared in the Acura line-up as the cross-over Acura MDX.

Ack Attack Post 22: Acura @ the Movies

Acuras are not the main car in any films. They only get the quick background parts and end up showing up in a flash. Only the most attentive eye can catch the quick shot of an Ack.

An Integra was driven by the main character in 2001's The Fast and The Furious, 2002's The Flying Car, and 2002's Try Seventeen. There is a first gen Cl in 2006's Repos, but the Acura in all of the other films is an Integra. Though the year of the Integra in these films varies, it is still a 'teg. Older films that the Integra was in are: True Crime, Beetoven, Amityville: The Evil Escapes, Slither, Corky Romano, Doctor Dolittle, and Dead Heat.

Ack Attack Post 21: It's All About the Reputation

Honda is known for its reliability and for how great their cars are. Acuras are basically upgraded Hondas: they're reliable, comfortable, luxurious, relatively affordable, and eye-catching. Though they have had a few blips with the CL transmission, on average, they have improved looks and performanace. Acura was the first brand to bring in the VTEC technology in their engines, and then the Hondas got it. The Acuras were the first to have a relatively large number of airbage come standard, then the Hondas got it. It seems as though the Acuras were selling to well that Honda decided to include some of the specifications from the Acura into their own lineup to make the Hondas sell better.

Though many of the Honda parts fit on Acuras, there is a large difference in the service experience. The salesmen at many Acura dealers are not very attentive to the needs of the customer, and think that time is only a number and that if you can spend that much on a car, then you can spend it to fix them. The salesmen at the Honda dealers do not feel this way. They are exteremely kind and cater to the customer at all times. Many people who have Acuras will go to the Honda dealerships to have their cars worked on because the Acura salesmen are simply unkind.

So while the Acura brand has a great reputation, the salesmen and sales department make the experience for the Acura owners quite miserable. Overall, if you want to drive an Acura, you're going to get a great car and you will be doubly happy that it won't need to be fixed often because you will not want to deal with the people at the dealership.

Ack Attack Post 20: Upgrades/Accessories

There are tons of accessories for Acuras, from light up emblems to turbo kits and lowering springs. Newer Acuras come with Brembo brand brakes on them, but the older ones do not, but you could always add those if you wanted, though it would set you back a few thousand dollars. Though the seats in the Acks are already really comfortable, you could upgrade to racing seats. Racing seats are safer than regular seats because they have a five stap belt, which holds the individual in the seat better. There are many brands of racing seats, such as Bride, Sparco, or Caribou.

Many tuners who drive the Acuras decide to "de-badge" them, which means that they choose to take the emblems off or to change them. There are all kinds of emblems avaiable, such as different colors, ranging from gold and silver to blue or red, and there are also light up emblems which can be incorporated to the front or the posterior end of the car. A small tune like this is very cheap and is easy to do, but many people choose to keep their stock emblems or to totally get rid of them.

A turbo adds horsepower and a little torque to your vehicle. This is an air-induction upgrade, and gives the car much better gas milage because it uses cold, pressurized air to give an average 300% power increase, therefore requiring less gas for more speed/power.

An intake is a common tuner mod. It's pretty easy to do and relatively inexpensive - depending on the brand of intake which is chosen. There are many brands of intakes, such as APC, Weapon R, Tenzo R, or Injen.

Lowering springs are used to make the car closer to the ground. There is less room between the wheel and the top of the wheel well when lowering springs are added. They're pretty expensive and run about $200 for a set of four springs. The best brands are Eibach and Tein.

Upgrades are great to make in order to make the car run faster and/or more efficiently. Items such as body kits, spoilers, or tint are more for cosmetic modifications and do not have much of an impact on the performance of the car. The power upgrades are more expensive, but this is mainly because they are for much more than looks.

Ack Attack Post 19: Comparison: RSX-Prelude

The RSX is the more affordable sports car in the Acura family. The prelude is the sports car for the Honda line up. The RSX costs much more than the prelude and is used for show much more often than the prelude. The Prelude, on the other hand, is used more often for drag. It does not have as much torque as the RSX and the RSX has a shorter body, making it better for drift than the Prelude. The Prelude is used more for drag racing than the RSX because high performance accessories are more affordable for it and the spacious engine bay allows for more modifications to be put in it.

The RSX seems like Acura put so much time and effort into it that there is not much room for modifications. The Prelude is fairly basic, so Honda has left plenty of room for upgrades and easy improvements to be made.

Overall, the RSX is just a much classier car than the Prelude. The Prelude is more of a "fixer-upper," while the RSX is closer to the final product of what a tuner would want to turn the Prelude into.

Ack Attack Post 18: Comparison: CL-Accord

Since Acura is a brand of Honda, the cars are much the same. Many Acuras can be fixed at Honda dealerships because many of the parts are compatible - though not all are. The Acura Cl has been in production for a far shorter time than the Accord Coupe. The Cl is based on the Accord Coupe,. The suspension and interior parts mirror the 94-97 Accord and the engine is based on the 98-02 Accords - for the 2nd Gen Cl's, that is. The front of the Cl is much like that of the Accord, and makes it look like a Honda.

The Cl can handle mountains and curves more easily than a Honda, being that it able to stick to the road a little more easily. Though the Cl would most likely be compared with the Accord coupe, it is technically based on the sedan. The Cl is about 2 inches longer in the body than the Accord, making body kits into a tough across-the-board fit on the two coupes. Being that there were not all too many Cl's sold, there are not half as many on the road as Accords, which are still in production. Overall, the Cl is simply a step up from the Accord, in styling, speed, elegance...and price.

Ack Attack Post 17: History of Acks

Acura is the offspring of Honda. Coming to market in 1986, Acura represented the luxury automobiles and near-luxury vehicles. Acura was introduced to Mexico in 2004, to China in 2006, and is planned to be put into the Japanese domestic market in 2008.

Being that Acura was the first Japanese luxury brand to appear in the US, there were only a few vehicles offered. Two versions of the Legend and the Integra were available right from the start. Four years later, the NSX was introduced, it was the world's first all-aluminum production car.

Though sales suffered for a few years, Acura realized a new audience in the 1990's, the tuner enthusiasts. Honda's easy -to-tune cars carried over to the Acuras and the younger generation took note and began making the mods.

Acrura's re-birth begain in 2000, with the introduction of numerous redesigned models. The TL, MDX, and RSX helped Acura make great strides in sales. Acura's newer models, the RL and TSX have been very well received in all markets. The TL, TSX, and MDX are Acura's best selling vehicles. In 2006, Acura introduced the RDX, which is their small SUV; this is their newest car up to date.

As for a timeline, in 1986, Acura debuts in America as the first Japanese luxury brand. In 1991, Acura was introduce in Hong Kong by Reliance Motors. In 1997, the Integra Type-R was introduced. In 2001, the MDX won Motor Trend's "SUV of the Year" award. In 2002, the RSX replaced the Integra in North America. In 2003, the TSX was introduced as the replacement for the CL coupe and Integra sedan. The Mexican market was introduced to Acura in 2004, and the thrid generation TL was the best selling luxury car in America. In 2005, the RL was introduced. 2006 brought about the introduction of Acura to the Chinese marked, and the birth of the RDX. As for the future, Acura will debut in Japan in 2008 and there are 2 concepts in the workings, one being the re-birth of the NSX.

Ack Attack Post 16: Ack Magazines/Forums

As with most tuner cars, there are tons of magazines, forums, and articles about Acuras. They seem to appear in every issue of mph, roadgear, turbo, Sport Compact Car, Modified Mag, and Super Street that have published. The majority of these magazines are for tuners, hence why most of the Acuras which show up in them are Integras or RSX's. Many tuners will buy these magazines in order to gain further knowledge about a modification they are trying to make to their car or to get new ideas of what they could do. The HaynesXtreme :Customizing has a book devoted entirely to Acuras. Inside this book are numerous ideas of how to tune an Acura, from engine upgrades and in-car entertainment to exterior mods like calipers, body kits, and rims. There is also a Haynes Repair Manual for Acuras - some which correspond with Hondas. This repair manual can help for large and small projects, it helps when you're tuning or if something just breaks!

There are tons of Acura forums. Of them AcuraZine is my favorite. Being that Acuras are part Honda, there are many forums which incorporate both cars. For example, Honda-Acura.net, SuperHonda.com, and vtech.net are just a few. Acura forums are better, in my opinion, because everyone in the forum you are in could have your exact car. Acuraworld and Acuraforums are a few others which are Acura-specific forums.

Forums are a great companion for anyone who is interested in learning more about their car. From tuning, to shows, to common problems, forums can enhance your experience with you car and allow you to know how to fix common problems.

Ack Attack Post 14: Tuner RSX

The RSX is meant to be Acura's economical sports car. It's small, lightweight, and fast! This car is not modded out as much as the 'Teg, but that could be because it costs a considerable bit more.

The main things which people will put on the RSX are angle eye headlights or a body kit. Since the RSX is already sporty and has racing seats in it, there is no need for them. Also, this car is more or less for simply going fast, which means weighing it down with a sound system may not be the best idea. The RSX is used a lot in shows and there are numerous toy models of it whereas there are not many for the Integra unless you really look for them. As a whole, the RSX is seen as a much nicer car than the 'Teg and therefore does not need the tuner "upgrades" that an Integra might. Also, there is no reason to modify the engine of the RSX unless you just want to put in a cold-air intake or a transmission cooler.

The RSX is more or less just beautiful as it is, so it isn't too often that its owners want to impose on its existing beauty. Because of its cost, the RSX is usually driven by people who have a decent amount of money and if it's a modded out RSX, they have a lot of money. The cheaper way to go for most kids is to mod out an Integra.

Ack Attack Post 13: Tuner CL

The Acura Cl is very classy and sophisticated - not a car generally thought of as being a Tuner car. First Gen Cl's and Second Gen Cl's are about 50/50 with the modding. Modding is generally for the younger generation, but some older people have gotten into the tuner-mode as well. It is more difficult to get accessories for modding for older cars, hence 1st gens. This is because they are too old and since tuning was not popular when they came out, parts were not made for tuning them. The 2nd gens are easier to tune because part are made for them. Also, since parts are so large on Cl's, such as the hood, an aftermarket carbon fiber hood is relatively expensive in comparison to that of the Integra.

There are a lot of people who have modded their Cl's and do not show it, hence sleepers. This is partially due to fun and partially due to the difficulty in modding the cars. Of course easier mods can be done: clear corners, blacking out tail lights, intake, racing seats, sound system, and underglow. In order to put a turbo in this car though, you have to do an engine swap - which is an added difficulty as well as an added cost.

Ack Attack Post 12: Tuner Integra

Of the Acuras, the Integra is by far the most modded car. There are simple modifications that can be done, such as rims, race tires, audio systems, and changing the headlights/taillights. There are more complicated mods though, such as putting on underglow, putting in racing seats, adding a P-chip, and putting in a turbo. Lambo doors are not a very common mod, but they are easy to install because all you need is a difference door hinge. Underglow neons are cheap to buy and super easy to install. All you need is a pair of ramps to put the car on, a few tools, some electrical tape, and a couple hours.

Many people find it easier to mod cars on their own rather than paying to have someone else to do it. Tuning has become a huge phenomenon and the 'Teg is dead center in it. Sleeper cars are not too common in 'Tegs. A sleeper is a car that shows no exterior markings of being a "race" car. The main things done to sleepers deal with the engine and intake. This way, someone could add a turbo and no one would know it when they line up next to you, until they hear the blow-off valve.

There are many different types of body kits, which one you choose just depends on your personal style. Rims are nearly infinte and new ones are being produced all the time. Painting callipers is also an extremely easy mod. Just take the wheels off, make sure the car is cold, and paint on! Spray painting or painting with a brush are both possibilities - you can find kits for both at any auto parts store. You can buy books which have step-by-step instructions on different mods you can do and how to do them as well as joining forums to gather ideas from others.

Ack Attack Post 11: Future/Concepts

There are 2 new concept cars for Acura: the Sedan concept and the Sports Car concept. The Sedan is a 4 door vehicle with a large chrome piece that looks like a smile. There are many parts of the car that are chrome. The lighting is also very futuristic. Small triangular near 35 degree angle lights are in the front while there is a strip down the trunk with two lights on either side. Large chrome rims, reminds me of an older Rolls Royce with a kick.

The second concept car is a two-door sports car. In reality, this is supposed to be the replacement for the NSX. The rims on this car are absolutely stunning - brushed silver spider spokes with an juicy chrome center. Shaved door handles allow for better air flow and a more aerodynamic design. Headlights are very small and look blue and yellow, while the tail lights are huge and take up the majority of the trunk. The tail lights seem to follow the pattern of an Infiniti G35, and a quadruple exhaust add a design element unseen before on the Acura scene.

Overall, these cars are just extremely futuristic and will most likely not be embraced quite yet by the public. As a matter of fact, Acura has a survey on their site asking the public their opinion of the models, so it seems they are not too sure how smoothly we can transition into these futuristic cars, either.

Ack Attack Post 10: Legend

The Acura Legend was in production from 1986 to 1995 until it was replaced with the Acura RL in 1996. The first gen Legends had either a 2.5L or a 2.7L engine and came in a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The Legend was made to be Acura's premier luxury vehicle in 1986 and incorporated many technical innovations in its design. The Legend was the first coupe to be engineered using computer aided design. It had a top speed of 135mph and was comprable to the Audi 100 and Volvo 740. In 1990, the Legend received slight improvements to the interior with the new woodgrain and improvements to the exterior include new headlamps, front bumper, revised trunk lid, and a body colored grille.

Second gen Legends had a 3.2L engine and were available in a 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic, and a 6-speed manual. Beginning in 1991, these newer models had 200 bhp and had DOHC added to their record. In '91 and '92, the Legend was available in three trims: Base, L, and LS. In '93, and additional 30 hp was added, making a grand total of 230hp in the Type II Legend.

Ending its run in 1995, the Legend was set for a "third gen" as the newly badged Acura 3.5RL.

Ack Attack Post 9: NSX

The Acura NSX was made for racing! The NSX was the supercar and has the looks and performance to support it. Produced from 1990-2005, the NSX had major engine changes though remained a two-door coupe as it was intended. Just to reiterate the greatness of this car, it was named the 1991 Car of the Year by Weels magazine.

The NSX was available in a 3.0 and 3.2L engine. Many different models were produced, though not all were sold in the US. The NSX-R was release exclusively for JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) and only 500 were made. In 1995, the NSX-T was released in Japan as a special order option, because it included a targa top. The biggest changes occured in 1997, when the BHP was increased to from 270 to 290. The torque was also increased from 210 to 224. The brake rotor size increased as well, from 12 inches to 13. Two more models, the NSX Type-S and the NSX Type-S Zero. These two models had stiffer suspension than the regular stock NSX.

There is a special edition Alex Zanardi Edition NSX to commemorate Alex Zanardi's 2 back-to-back wins for the Acura/Honda racing team in 1997 and 1998. The main differences on this model are the brushed alluminum serial number, the engraved Acura logo and Aanardi's signature. It also has black red-stitched leather/suede seats and an OEM steering wheel.

The NSX Type-R was re-released in Japan with limited number to go to production. This time, it was much more aggressive in styling and included a spoiler and hood vent. The more agile NSX-R GT was later released in Japan, selling for $462,400 because there only 5 made.

Although the NSX is now out of production, Acura has plans to make a new model for the 2008-2009 production year.

Ack Attack Post 8: Integra

The Acura Integra was made from 1986-2001. From '86 to '98 the Type R, and RS hatchback coupe were still in production, in '99, these high-performance models left the playing field, leaving the LS, GS, and GS-R in two and four door form. The Integra, called the "Teg" by enthusiasts, is a small, sporty car which was mainly sold as a hatchback. First Gen Tegs had a 1.6 4-cylinder engine and were available in a 3-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan, and a 5-door hatchback. Second Gens came with 1.7 L 4-cylinder or 1.8L 4-cylinder engines. The 2nd gens were available in a 3-door hatchbakc and a 4-door sedan. Third gens came with a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and were available in 2 styles, the 3-door hatchback and the 4-door sedan. The most dramatic change to the Integra occured in the 1994 production year. Dual airbags and a shorter wheelbase were incorporated due to the new plan to base the Teg on the Honda Civic front-drive platform.

The Type R was the best selling model for the Integra due to its special attention to detail. The Type R had differently shaped combustion chamber and intake ports, as well as high compression pistons and two extra counterweights on the crankshaft, enhancing durability at high RPMs. An intake was drawn from inside the fender well which made it colder, feeding into a short-runner intake manifold allowing for the car to receive colder air more easily.

In 2002, Acura decided to revise their concept of the Integra. Through this painful process of weeding out such an upstanding car, Acura came up with the new and improved Acura RSX, which had a sad, short life span of only 4 years (2002-2006).

Ack Attack Post 7: CL

Sadly enough, Acura's only Mid-size coupe is no longer in production. After only a 2 Gen run, this luxury sports car must RIP. First gens were made from 1997-1999 and came in 2.2L and 3.0L options. The 2nd gens, made from 2001-2003, have 3.2L engines.

The CL was made to replace the Acura Legend coupe and was the first Acura to be built in the US. From 2000-2003, less than 31,000 CL's were sold, hence its extinction. Also, CL's had numerous transmission problems - mainly only in the automatics. Though many factory trannys were fixed, their replacements tended to fail as well. Transmission issues were existant in the Acura MDX, Honda Odyssey, and Honda Accord during these years, too.

In dealing with the future of the CL, no solid plans are in the works. A mid-size coupe is not a design dabbled in by most car manufacturers, and this may be one of the reasons Acura stopped CL production. Overall, the CL is loved by its owners, even with its faulty transmission. The sexy styling, gorgous engine, and unsuspecting power hooks even the most hesitant driver.

Ack Attack Post 6: TL

Though introduced in 1996, Acura's TL is now in it's 3rd generation of production. The 1st gens had a 2.5L and a 3.2L engine options, the 2nd gens had a 3.2L and a 3.2L 6-cylinder engine options, and the 3rd gens have a 3.2 and a 3.5L engine option. The RL was made to replace the Acura Vigor hence why it was not intended to be the sporty sedan that it now is. Beginning with only 176 bhp, the 3rd gens have definately improved with the standard base sedan having 258bhp. Coming in around 3600 lbs., it's no wonder the TL has around 240lbs. of torque to compensate.

In comparison, the 3rd generation "Type S" has many more options than the base model. Though both 3rd gens are quite impressive, the "Type S" reigns supreme in the details category. The 2007's have 286bhp, led lights, quad exaust pipes, Brembo brakes, 10 spoke wheels, special color options, special badging, "Type S" on the steering wheel and head rests, carbon fiber trim, red interior lighting, and a standard Navigation system. Overall, the "Type S" can make a sports car driver into a sedan believer - it's killer when it comes to the add-ins. The details add the "wow" factor to this sedan and make it appealing to those older folks who still like to let out the teenager inside of them from time to time, as well as appeal to 20-some-year-olds who are trying to grow up a little bit.

The TL has been Acura's mid-size sedan for 12 years now, and is still in production. Though the body style and details have definately kept up with the times, a new model version is in the works for 2009.

Ack Attack Post 5: RL

The Acura RL was made to be the replacement for the Legend, Acura's first four-door sedan. The meaning of RL is not clear, though it may mean "Road Luxury" or "Replaces Legend". The RL has 225 bhp, and in my opinion, could be a little quicker. It has a 3.5L engine, while the two-door CL has a 3.0L engine. In comparison, the RL has only added 25bhp since the CL has 200bhp. This compensation isn't quite good enough to make a noticable difference from a two-door to a sedan. There just isn't enough "get up and go" for this sedan and it could use a little more power if you asked me. In order to address this power problem, the newer RL's have 290bhp which is just enough kick to make that subtle difference.

The RL is considered to be Acura's mid-size sedan, though it is only available in a V6 while most others have an available V8. Though the RL is fairly slow in accordance with other mid-size sedans, it compensates with its available technology features. A navigation system and a 5.1 audio system with real-time traffic updates are available options. While the RL was once considered to be "high class", it is now easily overshadowed by many other mid-size sedans. This beauty was once thought to be the perfect replacement for Acura's sedan line-up, but a re-vamp of Acura's line up must be in store to ensure future sales in the sedan category.

Ack Attack Post 4: RDX

New for 2007, Acura has introduced the RDX. The RDX is a mix between a car and an SUV. It has a 2.3 L engine, 240 bhp, and 260lbs. of torque. It gets 19mpg city an 23mpg highway, although the mileage isn't too wonderful, it's not as harsh on the wallet as the MDX or a larger SUV. Even though this is a new car, the crash tests are already perfect with 5-star frontal and side-impact tests. The RDX is the first Acura to be turbocharged and leads consumers to believe that if sales go well, perhaps future vehicles will be turbocharged as well. Competators include the BMW X3, Mazda CX-7, and the Toyota Rav-4.

As far as accessories are concerned, the RDX keeps the class expected by Acura while adding a fun and sporty element given by sports cars. The center console includes a small joystick rather than simply knobs and buttons for easier use when switching stations on the radio or changing the temperature in the cabin. The intercooler faces upwards and can be seen where the engine was in previous Acura models. Another new idea in the RDX is the grille. There is no real grille in the RDX, it is more or less just a brushed silver opening in the front of the car with an "A" emblem connecting the bumper and the hood. Though this look is new to the showroom, it may by used in future models depending on how it is received by the public.

Ack Tech: Mandy's Corner

I drive a '97 3.0 Cl. So far, I have an Alpine sound system, composed of an Alpine headunit, sub box, 12' Type R sub, and Alpine Amp. Alpine is a great brand, known for their clarity of sound while still being able to deliver that extra "kick" the consumer is looking for. Pink neons were added to my car last year, on the underside. Many tuner cars are now made with an extra lip on the sideskirts of the car, but mine was not. Because of this, I had to put them on myself, and they are pretty much tied onto the body of my car with wire ties.

I also have a set of 17' Konig rims on my car. The rims were my second addition, following the sound system. I love the rims because I feel that they are the only exterior feature of my car that allows for others to realize my passion for tuning. I am on numerous Acura and Honda forums, and try to keep up-to-date on new problems, dyi's, and easy fixes that people have going on with their cars. Overall, it's tough being a girl and liking cars, people look at me strange when I go to car shows and actually enjoy it. My vote: do what you want, whatever your sex may be. If it makes you happy, stick with it.

Ack Attack Post 3: MDX

Though it made it's showroom debut in 2001, the new 2007 Acura SUV, the MDX, packs 300 bhp and 250lbs. of torque. Though the 2001 model was around $34,000, the newly revised edition which went into production in 2007 sells for a base of $40,000. Though this jump in price isn't a major significance, the improvements are quite noticible amongst the years. While the MDX looks to be a smaller SUV, it still has 3 rows of seating: the 2nd row with 40/60 folding and the 3rd row with 50/50 folding. Outside of the base model, the 2007 MDX can be outfitted with different packages, such as the Sport package, the Technology package, or the Entertainment package.

With a 3.7 L engine and a V-6, the MDX sets itself apart from all other SUV's. The 2007 MDX comes with heated mirrors and seats, 18 inch allow wheels, and rear privacy glass all as standards. As far as size goes, the MDX has a height of 68.2 inches, a length of 190.7 inches, and an overall width of 78.5 inches, making it slightly wider than a Dodge Durango.
